On July 1, in Riga, the event took place which was banned by Riga City Council and authorized by the decision of the Administrative District Court devoted to the 69th anniversary of the entry of troops of Hitler’s Germany in the capital of Latvia, a correspondent of REGNUM News reports.
Not numerous participants, called a group of Latvian radical nationalists, taking part in the march to the Freedom Monument at 19:00 local time (20:00 Moscow time) surrounded by the larger crowds of journalists, cameramen and onlookers, began to move from so-called Museum of the Occupation.
But soon the road was blocked by two cars of the municipal police with flashing lights included.
Some part of the marchers, including one of the initiators of the action Igors Shishkinsa, returned to the building of the Museum of the occupation.
Here the representatives of the municipal police tried to detain Shishkinsa, but he had a fairly active (non-violent) resistance.
The police, who were greatly outnumbered by force, managed to twist his arm.
He was dragged to the police car with the cheers of some people and the indignant cries of others, under the chatter of dozens of television and still cameras were packed into Pusik.
However, that was not all.
Soon people willing to put the flowers appeared at the Freedom Monument, which in a few minutes walk from the Museum of the occupation.
A tall shaven-headed young man in a suit and tie was the first to do it, trying to give his activities a maximum of solemnity.
He was followed by several more people laying flowers to the monument.
“One occupation (Soviet – REGNUM News) was replaced by another (German – REGNUM News).
We do not prevent Russian from celebrating May 9, “- he explained his actions to a correspondent of REGNUM news, not wishing to give his name and the organization that he represents at the same time.
Moreover, he repeatedly stressed that the Latvians and Russians have nothing to share in Latvia.
Meanwhile, the mood of the crowd, which gradually gathered at the foot of the monument of freedom (there have been several dozens people, along with journalists and opponents of the event), was very diverse.
Someone demanded the trial of the collaborators, meaning the current leadership of Latvia, which cooperates with the U.S., Russia and Israel in the destruction of Latvian industry, and decolonization, meaning the expulsion of veterans of the Soviet Army from the country who remained after the withdrawal of Russian forces.
Someone tried to discuss.
Someone showed a richly illustrated book “A terrible year”, narrating the abuses that were brought down by the Soviet regime (participants of the event said: “Russian”) on the Latvian people in June 1941.
“Russian is worse than Nazis!” – cried out a woman, and added: “A terrible year goes on!”.
There were other shouts of insulting character to non-Latvians.
However, it was felt that people were taking out the bitterness from the misery and humiliation in Latvia.
“I have jobs and earn nothing,” – tall shaven-headed young man in a suit said, among other things.
Tattered collar of his white shirt proved that he was telling the truth.
The police did not prevent the contact between the exponents of different views.
By 20:00 local time, people had begun to disperse.
Calendar of dates, provoking ethnic strife and unrest, thus was replenished.
